LONGING
2015
steel, rubber, mirror, void
10 x 15 x 82 feet
Minneapolis, MN
The site is the only segment removed from the City of Minneapolis’ 8-mile-long network of “skyway” pedestrian bridges. It sat for nine years on a peripheral city lot, decay taking its toll on the interior. We recursively connect this fragment to a new network of its own making, acknowledging the memory of a forgotten system.
Two inward-facing, movable mirrors are suspended at either end of the skyway, creating a visually infinite environment bridging toward distant horizons. The virtual space flexes as wind rotates the mirrors with a mere 35 pounds of pressure. The work’s title is both an emotional expression and a verbal play on lengthening.
Some days are calm, with breezes inducing a gentle swaying of the vanishing point. Other moments are more violent, as the wind pushes forcefully and turns the work into a lurching machine. There is little stability as the illusion of depth yearns for a homing ground. Infinity wanders longingly, and the space it implies bends into new forms.
