This kinetic installation shifts visitors’ perceptions of the world around them. We can’t get rid of the infrastructure of these walls, but we can refuse their hold and introduce new conceptualizations of space and occupation.
Seating, shading, and water are arrayed in section, creating upper and lower stories with different characters. Below, each intersecting spatial volume contains two large gimbaled mirrors suspended from a butterfly-like frame. These planes move in the wind or when touched, multiplying views and unsettling conventional spatial relationships with an analog glitchiness. Graphite murals mark where these voids traverse the perimeter walls. Above, periscope trusses provide dislocating views from the courtyard interior to the exterior street. The trusses release a pulsating static of mist and light that resets the scene and evaporatively cools the crowds enjoying the summertime programming.
