WITHIN HER WING
Socrates Sculpture Park and East River shoreline, Queens, NY, 2001.
Polyester resin fiberglass, residual materials from casting process (wood, stone, brick, nails, dirt, blue rubber gloves, tidal residue, etc.). 9’-8”x27’-0”x15’-6”.
Within Her Wing is a record of the East River shoreline and a decaying wooden barge. Fiberglass castings of negative space between the decaying wood capture form, texture, detritus, and gravity. The monolithic casting was released from the site by crane and flipped over the waterfront path. The piece transports a memory, a landscape, from a site out of bounds to one within. It has two sites: that of its making and that of its placement. The title of the group show was “Beyond City Limits” and the piece’s recording of a derelict urban blind-spot relates directly to that concept.
