A cidade nunca cresceu de forma significante. Em 2010, último recenseamento, tinha pouco mais de seis mil habitantes. Sem atrativo praticamente algum, a não ser a pesca no rio, o único prédio realmente bonito está abandonado na ponta da linha da ferrovia, aonde o trem já não chega há mais de dez anos. Ali a estação de passageiros funcionou até 1978, quando parou ali o último trem de passageiros, que fazia tres vezes por semana um bate e volta em Barretos. O telhado da estação já caiu. As linhas estão cheias de mato.
